Protect Yourself from IRS Scams
300 West Plant Street, Winter Garden, FL 34787
Thousands of taxpayers have received phone calls recently from criminals allegedly calling on behalf of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Many of these calls appear to be an official message as the phone number comes up as “IRS” on caller ID, and the scammer often knows the last four digits of the taxpayer’s Social Security number.
The IRS has reported that this is the largest phone scam they have ever experienced. The bogus callers tell the victims that they owe taxes and demand payment with either a prepaid debit card or immediate wire transfer. For those who refuse compliance, the caller threatens the victim with the potential of arrest, deportation, or loss of their driver’s or business license.
Most IRS scams occur during tax season. These calls have been increasingly prevalent lately and require special caution.
If you or a loved one believes they have fallen victim to this or any scam, please don’t hesitate to contact my office at (407) 654-5705.
Further, if you receive a phone call from the IRS asking for payment information, the IRS recommends that you HANG UP. Even if you owe federal taxes, or think you may owe taxes, hang up and call the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040. You can also call my office at (407) 654-5705 for assistance.
Every year, taxpayers have the potential of being victimized by scams, solicitations, and fraudulent claims. To learn more about this and how to identify tax scams, read the material found on the IRS website at www.irs.gov.
