Webster Statement on Bernhardt Confirmation Proceedings

Washington, DC – Florida Congressman Daniel Webster, R-Clermont, today released the following statement on the nomination of David Bernhardt as Secretary of the Department of Interior.

“As a Floridian and Deputy Republican Leader of the House Natural Resources Committee, I take seriously our obligation to maintain responsible oversight of our nation’s wildlife, lands and environment while ensuring Americans can enjoy these unique resources.  I am committed to extending the eastern Gulf moratorium before it expires in 2022 to preserve the unique commercial and recreational angling, tourism and military uses of the eastern Gulf.

“To accomplish this, we need a knowledgeable individual who is committed to serving with humility and commonsense.  I believe Mr. Bernhardt is this person and I hope my Senate colleagues will swiftly confirm him as the Secretary of the Interior.  I hope under his leadership, the Department will stand by the commitment to exclude Florida’s offshore waters from the National Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Draft Proposed Plan.  I look forward to working with him and my committee and Florida Delegation colleagues to preserve and protect America’s unique ecosystems and lands.”
