Webster Statement on Irresponsible Spending Bill

Washington, DC – Florida Congressman Daniel Webster (R-Clermont), today released the following statement on why he is voting no on H.R. 2740, which funds the federal agencies that oversee Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, Defense, State and Foreign Operations, Energy and Water Development and the Legislative Branch.

“Democrats have chosen to spend like drunken sailors, while also refusing to provide funds for the humanitarian and security crisis at our southwest border.  In fact, Democrats have included language that specifically prohibits spending any money on the border wall or any other barriers.

“Further, this bill would force the administration to make grants to Planned Parenthood and seeks to block rules that protect life and restrict taxpayer dollars from being spent on abortions. Democrats rejected every proposal by Republicans that would provide $4.5 billion for the humanitarian crisis at our border or prevent spending taxpayer dollars on abortions.

“I ran for office pledging to do my part to stop the spigot of spending and get our fiscal house in order.  This bill does the opposite of that and I will not break my pledge to my constituents and the American people.”

H.R. 2740 totals nearly $1 trillion in spending. This $176 billion increase busts the Budget Control Act spending caps, which could lead to sequestration and trigger devastating cuts to our military.
