Washington, D.C. — Florida Congressman Daniel Webster, R-Clermont, sent a letter to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis regarding the recent tragedy involving a known criminal murdering a 9-year-old, 38-year-old, and a local reporter on February 22nd.
The letter expresses Rep. Webster’s support of Governor DeSantis’ actions to keep Florida safe by removing officials that refused to enforce the law, his office’s request for information from State Attorney Worrell regarding Mr. Moses criminal history and encourages Governor DeSantis to take further action if dereliction of duty by State Attorney Worrell is found.
“This repeat criminal who Orange County Sheriff Mina referred to as a ‘known gang member,’ has repeatedly been arrested for crimes as a juvenile and then once as an adult. Yet despite this Mr. Keith Melvin Moses was allowed to walk free,” Rep Webster states in the letter. “We simply cannot have criminals wandering our streets endangering the lives of innocent people because soft on crime prosecutors don’t want to prosecute crimes. I’ve cosponsored legislation that would expose prosecutors who fail the fulfill their duties so they can be held accountable. We must protect our citizens.”
The text of the letter is below and here.
Dear Governor DeSantis:
As you are aware our community suffered the horrific loss of three lives at the hands of a murderous young man last week. This repeat criminal who Orange County Sheriff Mina referred to as a “known gang member,” has repeatedly been arrested for crimes as a juvenile and then once as an adult. Yet despite this Mr. Keith Melvin Moses was allowed to walk free. I’m not an expert on criminal law, but it’s clear that something must be done.
I agreed with your decision to remove the Hillsborough County State Attorney for pledging not to enforce certain new abortion laws and concur with your recent statement that, “you have to hold people accountable.” I also support your office’s February 28th letter to the 9th Circuit’s State Attorney Monique Worrell requesting information on her office’s failure to act to hold Mr. Moses accountable and encourage you to take further action if your investigation shows a dereliction of duty.
We simply cannot have criminals wandering our streets and endangering the lives of innocent people because soft on crime prosecutors don’t want to prosecute crimes. I’ve cosponsored legislation that would expose prosecutors who fail to fulfill their duties so they can be held accountable. We must protect our citizens.
Thank you for your leadership and work to keep Florida safe.
Sincerely,
