Electoral College

Timeline of the Electoral College

The timeline for certifying election results and procedures for electoral college actions are:

  • The county elections officials' timeline to count ballots and report results to their Department of State varies by state. Under Florida Law, county supervisors of elections can begin processing mail ballots early, but that is not the case in all states.

  • Following Election day (November 3rd), the Governor's file official “Certificates of Ascertainment,” which includes the elector's chose based on the vote results. If results are contested, the Certification is held while states follow the statutory process for settling election controversies or contests.

  • The final decision regarding controversies or contests of elections must occur at least 6 days before the meeting of electors.

  • On December 14th, electors in states will vote for President and Vice President on separate ballots. Electors’ votes are recorded and certified by the states with the Certificate of Ascertainment.

  • On December 23rd, Electoral votes must be received by the President of the Senate and the Archivist.

  • On or before January 3rd, 2021, as the new Congress assembles, the Archivist will transmit sets of certificates to Congress.

  • On January 6th, 2021, Congress meets in a joint session to count the electoral votes.
