PHOTO RELEASE: Rep. Webster Announces Congressional App Challenge Winner

Leesburg, FL – Yesterday, Florida Congressman Daniel Webster announced Xander Jenkin as the 2019 Congressional App Challenge winner for Florida District 11. Jenkin, an 11th grader from Citrus County created an app which allows users to take a photo on their phone, upload and scan the photo into the app, and detect any color that is present within the photo.

“In our classrooms today, sit the next generation of creative and innovative leaders,” said Rep. Webster, an electrical engineer. “I am passionate about encouraging students to pursue computer science and STEM- based education. These skills are essential for maintaining a prosperous economy and ensuring our country remains a leader in innovation.”

As the winner from Florida District 11, Xander's app will be featured on CongressionalAppChallenge.US, and on the house.gov website. His app is also eligible to be displayed in the Capitol Building for one year.

Webster further remarked, “I want to extend my sincere appreciation to the parents, teachers and administrators who supported the challenge.  They are working to equip the next generation of app developers and coders to flourish and enrich our community.”

The Congressional App Challenge is a nationwide event intended to engage students’ creativity and encourage their participation in STEM fields. This competition allows students to compete with peers in their own district by creating and exhibiting their software application for web, PC, tablet, mobile devices and other platforms of their choice. A total of 35 students and 16 teams from schools across the district participated in this year’s challenge.
