Washington, D.C. — Florida Congressman Daniel Webster, R-Clermont, released the following statement after voting to pass H.R. 7700, the Stop Unaffordable Dishwasher Standards Act, and H.R. 7637, the Refrigerator Freedom Act.
“Americans know best what appliances will best suit their needs and don’t need bureaucrats in Washington dictating their options,” said Rep. Webster. “Rather than work to advance policies that would lower energy costs for the American people, the Biden Administration continues to pursue an agenda that takes away consumer choice and burdens families with overreaching regulations. These bills fight back against President Biden and Far Left democrats’ radical climate agenda and protect consumer choice.”
Background:
H.R. 7700 and H.R. 7637 would protect affordability, quality, and consumer choice by prohibiting the Secretary of Energy from prescribing or enforcing energy conservation standards for residential refrigerators, freezers, and dishwashers.
The Energy Policy and Conservation Act of 1975 (EPCA) provides specific criteria the Department of Energy must follow in order to propose new appliance efficiency standards. Under the EPCA, the Secretary of Energy can only propose a new standard if it results in significant conservation of energy, is technologically feasible, and economically justified. The Biden Administration continues to ignore these requirements by proposing and finalizing standards that violate the statute.
