Statement by Rep. Daniel Webster on School Safety Bill

Washington, DC – Congressman Daniel Webster (R-Clermont), today issued the following statement on the passage of H.R. 4909, Stop School Violence Act.

“Today, I voted for H.R. 4909, the STOP School Violence Act.

“I recently met with high school students, teachers, school leaders, principals, administrators and local law enforcement to discuss school safety. The classroom is a place of learning, where students should feel safe, able to learn, and encouraged to dream and aspire to great accomplishments.

“We have learned that failure to follow proper protocols and the law and lack of response by law enforcement, the FBI and others led to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooter not being stopped before his heinous acts.

“The STOP School Violence Act includes more resources for training and conducting evidence-based school threat assessments. It also provides local law enforcement, school administrators and personnel, and students with the tools and skills necessary to safeguard our schools.

“We must also continue to demand that the intelligence gathered by law enforcement about potential threats never falls through the cracks again as it did in Broward County.”
